“The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” Benjamin Franklin quotes (American Statesman, Scientist, Philosopher, Printer, Writer and Inventor. 1706-1790)

The leaves closed above our heads, and the sun filtered through in thin streams. The jungle of Laos was both a place of concealment from our enemies and a prison. I had not seen the wide open sky for so long, I had begun to believe it was green instead of blue.

The Mekong River – I had never seen it, but I had been told that once we crossed it and reached the shores of Thailand, we would be free.

We had been walking, hiding, surviving for weeks. Time no longer had any meaning. Death no longer had any meaning. Some days my mind was filled with prayer. Some days I was too weak for my mind to function at all.

. . . this all changed when the Pathet Lao flew over and dropped the Yellow Rain. Then the streams became carriers of death. Rain that dripped from leaves covered with the Yellow Rain became puddles of poison.
